OrganiCity partners attended the annual Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, November 15-17. The expo is the world’s foremost gathering for public and private sector leaders working in all aspect of networked urbanism. Over three days, delegates from more than 500 cities around the world gathered for keynotes, panel discussions, roundtable meetings, and dozens of side events to discuss the critical issues shaping the future of smart cities.

An important meeting ground for the exchange of ideas was the exhibition hall where SME’s and other groups set up stalls to display their projects and demonstrate new technologies. OrganiCity shared a stall space with our partner Open and Agile Smart Cities (OASC) where we promoted our project.

An event of great interest to OrganiCity partners was a launch organised by OASC announcing 15 new cities as part of their global initiative to create a smart city market based on open standard mechanisms. Freja Fredslund Snedker, a student assistant on the OrganiCity project with Aarhus University offered her thoughts on this event:

The biggest event for me at the expo was the Open & Agile Smart Cities 5th Wave Launch on Wednesday. I’m currently responsible for the info email account on OASC website and helped to plan the whole event, so it was really nice for me to see it all coming together and to put faces on all the people I have been emailing with. Other fun experiences at the expo include the Dubai Police Robot which gave compliments to people interacting with it, and a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

Another interesting event titled Smart City Strategies in Action: The Global Experience was organised by our partner the Future Cities Catapult in collaboration with Arup. The event brought together municipal leaders from three cities to discuss the challenges and opportunities for cities seeking to create smart city strategies. Speakers included: Jeff Merritt, Director of Innovation for the city of New York; Zohar Sharon, Chief Knowledge Officer, Tel Aviv; Mr. Lie Tie, China Centre for Urban Development; and Steve Turner, Head of Smart Cities with Manchester Council (Formerly Associate Arup Digital, previously Head of Future Cities).
